About The AFE Foundation

Facility engineering, operations and maintenance professionals take great pride in their work. And why not? They are responsible for the comfort, safety and security of hundreds, if not thousands, of people who occupy their facilities.

Electric, water, heating, cooling, roofing, security systems and more—it is up to facilities engineers and related professionals to ensure that all facility systems work as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible. If something at their facility isn't working right, it doesn't matter what time it is, or which day of the week: it is up to the facilities engineer, maintenance and operation professionals to get it fixed. Fast.

Just as facilities professionals feel justifiably proud of their work, the Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE) takes pride in helping facilities professionals do their jobs, and in promoting our profession within the larger community. Since 1954, AFE has been a leader in training and knowledge-sharing for the facilities engineering, maintenance and operations community. This role is becoming increasingly important as much of the nation's workforce—including facilities professionals—moves toward retirement age and younger people need to be trained to take their places.

At the same time, the growing trend toward high efficiency and sustainable buildings means that workers of all ages need to be trained in the maintenance and operation of green building technology, green power generation (including solar and wind power), and ultra high efficiency and sustainable heating and air conditioning systems. As building systems become more complex and sophisticated, comprehensive training for all facilities maintenance and operations professionals becomes essential.

In response to these concerns, the AFE Foundation was established in 1978 as the philanthropic arm of AFE, with a mission of helping our profession increase its impact and standing within the larger community. Since then, the AFE Foundation has been developing programs to achieve its mission by:

  • Promoting the facilities engineering, maintenance and operations professions within the community and academia
  • Establishing scholarships to encourage more people to pursue facilities engineering as a profession
  • Advancing the application of technology in the operation and management of facilities and related systems
  • Encouraging and supporting studies and development of related facilities technology, applications and management and make the results of such activities available to the larger community and academia
  • Promoting cooperation among other technical, professional and governmental organizations whose objectives are compatible with AFE Foundation objectives

The AFE Foundation is an essential resource for the facilities engineering, maintenance and operations community. We hope you will help the Foundation further its mission by donating your time and financial resources to our efforts.
